Loafers with Tailoring: Fit, Socks and Trouser Hem

Loafers can work with tailored separates and relaxed suits, but their easy appearance depends on a secure fit. There are no laces to tighten during the day. Start with the shoe on your foot, then choose the socks and trouser finish around it rather than buying a smaller size to reproduce a photograph.

Check the heel and instep together

Crockett & Jones’s loafer overview emphasises heel fit because the shoe has no lace adjustment. During a fitting, notice whether the heel stays reasonably settled and whether the upper presses uncomfortably across the instep. A secure heel should not depend on squeezing the front of your foot.

Loake’s explanation of lasts identifies the last as the form that determines a shoe’s shape and fitting properties. Compare another last or width if the heel and forefoot seem to need different sizes. Automatically going down half a size is not a dependable rule across models.

Try the socks you intend to wear

Bring your usual dress socks to the fitting. If you also intend to wear hidden liners, try those separately. Sock thickness changes the space available inside the shoe; one fitting does not establish that both combinations will feel equally secure.

For a continuous line beneath tailored trousers, start with a fine sock close to the trouser colour. For an exposed-ankle look, check that a liner stays in place and remains hidden when you walk. These are styling options, not a requirement to wear loafers without visible socks. Our sock length and colour guide develops the choice.

Distinguish settling in from a poor fit

The Crockett & Jones fitting guide allows for a little heel movement in new shoes but also says they should feel comfortable at the first fitting. Small initial movement is not a reason to accept a shoe that repeatedly lifts off or requires you to grip with your toes.

Use a shoehorn to avoid crushing the back, try both shoes and walk as the retailer permits. Ask a fitter about persistent rubbing or pressure. Do not assume painful tightness will disappear, or add several pads before deciding whether the underlying shape suits you.

Set the hem with the actual loafers

Wear the intended trousers at their normal waist position. Check the front, side and back, then sit and stand again. Decide how much sock you want visible before shortening anything. Our trouser break guide explains the fitting sequence.

A cropped hem is optional. Judge the whole outfit and follow the occasion’s dress requirements. Find more everyday combinations in Watches & Wear.
