Collar stays are small supports inside a shirt’s collar points. They can help the points sit neatly, but they are only one part of how a collar behaves. Start with the shirt’s construction and the fit of the stay, then judge the result with the clothes you actually wear.
Check whether the stays are removable
Turn the collar over and look for a narrow pocket beneath each point. As OTAA’s collar-stay guide explains, stays may be removable or sewn in. Where there is an accessible pocket, the tapered end goes towards the collar point. Slide it gently into place.
Do not cut stitching to extract a fixed support or create a pocket in a collar without one. If the construction is unclear, ask the shirtmaker. A collar designed to roll softly need not be converted into a stiff pointed collar.
Match the size to the shirt
Use the original pair or the shirtmaker’s specified size as your starting point. Proper Cloth’s replacement stays, for example, come in different lengths for different collars: its list assigns 51 mm to some styles and 55 mm to others. Those are brand-specific matches, not universal shirt sizes.
Check width and thickness as well as length. A stay should sit within its intended pocket without being forced or making the fabric buckle. Compare both sides for an even result. A heavier metal stay is not automatically a better choice than the support supplied with the shirt.
Judge the collar with your outfit
Put the shirt on and check the points with your usual tie and jacket. Stays cannot enlarge a tight neckband or change the collar’s basic cut. For the wider relationship, see our guide to collars, tie knots and lapels.
For open-neck wear, compare the look with and without removable stays. Prefer the version that sits comfortably and gives the shape you want. If adding a sweater, assess the collar against the neckline too; our knitwear layering guide covers that separate fit decision.
Remove them before washing and pressing
Proper Cloth’s washing guide advises removing collar stays before laundering and ironing. Apply that instruction to removable stays; leave sewn-in supports in place and follow the garment’s care label. Take removable pairs out before handing shirts to a cleaner, too.
Keep the pair together and reinsert it after pressing, when the shirt is ready to wear. Find more clothing and accessory guides in Watches & Wear.
