The Suit: HVRMINN, Tailoring and Military Outerwear

Archive note: This newly written account revisits HVRMINN’s approach to suits and military-inspired outerwear. It does not reproduce the original Grandpa Style article or photography.

A suit can be the starting point for an outfit with several layers. Historical coverage of designer Minn Hur, whose label was HVRMINN, offers a particular example: tailored clothing worn with military outerwear. The interest lies in how the two kinds of clothing share an outfit.

A field coat over a suit

Articles of Style’s interview with Hur describes a double-breasted pinstripe suit worn with an M51 military field coat. In that combination, the coat extends beyond the suit jacket’s hem.

Our reading is that the outer layer changes the context of the suit. Pinstripes and a field coat bring tailored and utilitarian clothing into one outfit.

Two lines, related aims

In the same interview, Hur connected EPONYMOVS and VIETTO NYC through his interest in balancing appearance and practicality. Discussing VIETTO, he described adapting military uniforms through fabrics and craftsmanship while retaining their details and generous silhouettes.

Together, those accounts frame the suit as part of an outfit extending beyond the jacket and trousers.

A documented connection in 2015

On July 22, 2015, the CUNY Graduate Center reported on Hur’s collection at New York Fashion Week: Men’s. It identified him as HVRMINN’s cofounder, creative director and designer. The label’s explanation connected military references and elongated suit jackets with a tension between discipline and rebellion.

A separate Models.com show record, published July 13, 2015, identifies EPONYMOVS by HVRMINN’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection. The season and the record’s publication year are distinct. Neither date establishes when Grandpa Style’s original article appeared.

What to look for in the combination

For readers considering a coat over tailoring, these are our own questions to try with the clothes available:

  • Where does the outer coat finish relative to the suit jacket?
  • Can you close the coat and reach forward comfortably with the jacket underneath?
  • How much of the suit remains visible, and is that the balance you want?
