Watch Strap Length: Two Pieces, Buckle Position and Fit

A watch strap can be the correct width and still be the wrong length. For a conventional two-piece strap with a pin buckle, compare both strap sections, the usable holes and where the buckle rests. The aim is a secure, comfortable closure with a tail that stays neatly in its keepers.

Read both lengths, not just the size label

Two-piece strap lengths are often given as two numbers. Confirm which describes the long, perforated piece and which describes the buckle piece, and whether the buckle itself is included. A label such as medium is not a measurement you can transfer unchanged between makers.

For example, the NOMOS strap FAQ lists its standard Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan size M as a 118 mm long part and a 75 mm short part, excluding the clasp. Its separately listed cushioned or remborde versions have a 115 mm long part in size M. Check the exact construction you are ordering.

Include the wrist and the watch

Record your wrist circumference where you normally wear the watch, without pulling the measuring tape tight enough to indent the skin. STOWA’s length guidance considers both wrist circumference and watch size when selecting a strap. Its published fitting ranges apply to the straps it describes, not every replacement strap.

Give the supplier your watch reference as well as your wrist measurement. The two strap pieces overlap when fastened, so adding their full lengths does not give the closed wearing circumference. Our lug-to-lug guide explains another part of the watch’s overall reach.

Compare the buckle position and remaining tail

If an existing strap fits well, note both section lengths, the hole you use and where the buckle sits underneath your wrist. Ask a new supplier for its measurement points before comparing dimensions. Similar total lengths can still position the buckle differently when the split between the two pieces changes.

With the strap fastened, check that the tail reaches the keepers without an awkward amount remaining. Rest your wrist on a desk and notice pressure from the buckle. If you are near an extreme hole or cannot secure the tail comfortably, compare another length rather than assuming another hole will solve everything.

Confirm the fitting before choosing the finish

Length does not establish attachment compatibility. Confirm the watch-end width, attachment and intended buckle before fitting a replacement; ask the maker or a watchmaker if uncertain. Folding clasps and integrated straps can require different dimensions from the pin-buckle arrangement discussed here.

Once the fit is settled, our leather strap and steel bracelet styling guide considers appearance with tailoring. Find further practical advice in Watches & Wear.
